Travel feedback of the week: November 28 to December 5

06 December 2009, 19:20:53 - (432 hits)

Readers respond to Telegraph Travel articles and other topics. This week: trains to the slopes in Europe; and was a blog post unfair to Bali?

Train options
Your recent correspondent John Bray described his frustration at booking cheap rail travel to the slopes (Feedback, November 21). I suggest booking your Eurostar tickets online as soon as they become available as these can be purchased earlier than the Continental leg and have to be booked separately anyway. Then contact Rail Europe three months before your travel date to book the tickets for the rest of the journey.

We have never yet had a problem booking the required train to France/Germany/Italy/Austria – I should add that this is because we travel by day. Catching a Eurostar around 7am allows you to arrive comfortably in, say, Munich by 5.30 in the evening and at no greater price than you would pay when travelling with one of the low-cost airlines.

Rail Europe is extremely helpful in finding you the best priced ticket and route, but it levies a surcharge for tickets booked over the phone. Perversely though, the cheapest fares are not always available if you book online when your journey entails travel through different countries.

Don't forget the website
www.seat61.com, which gives invaluable advice on Continental rail travel. The Thomas Cook European Rail Timetable is good bedtime reading.

A handy bus pass
Regarding Mr Williams using his B & Q card as proof of age at the Colosseum (Feedback, November 21) – when in the United States I use my bus pass as proof of who I am (for example, when paying by credit card or registering at hotels) instead of getting out my passport.

Unfair to Bali
With regard to Jo Thompson's recent blog post on the Indonesian island of Bali ("Disenchanted by Bali"; perhaps Jo should have made the effort to get out of Kuta. There is so much more to Bali than Kuta. 'Imagem', website comment

Kuta is for party youths and sex tourists. What did you expect? Why would you go there, and why would you base your judgment of the island on it? Kuta has almost nothing in common with the rest of the gorgeous island.

I agree with the above. With a little effort (and less devotion to the tourist guidebook), you can find so much more in Bali. I live in the Lovina area, in north Bali, well away from the crass commercialism of Kuta.

Ms Thompson clearly states that outside Kuta Bali is beautiful. I love her blogs: they are written in a light-hearted way.

I for one am enjoying this blog and had a very welcome giggle today. I also like the more personal photographs that accompany the text. I can't wait for the next instalment.

Single sense
With regard to recent correspondence on travel for single people, I live in Seville and when there have been group tours from here to Morocco, for example, there has always been the option for travellers of the same sex to share bedrooms to save money.
It is just a matter of common sense. I have known it happen on group tours from the United Kingdom, but it depends on the travel company. News from telegraph.co.uk
